POSITION SUMMARY:
An opportunity has arisen for a commercially minded patent attorney with a strong chemistry background to join the Law Department of Infineum USA L.P. at its R&D Center in Linden, NJ.
The successful candidate will join a small, experienced team of in-house US, UK and European patent attorneys and administrators in providing a full IP service to the Infineum businesses. As an integral member of the Law Department, involvement in a range of in-house departmental and corporate initiatives can also be anticipated.
Infineum’s global research and development activity into additives for lubricants, fuels and other specialty fluids has undergone significant growth in recent years. With a large scientific client base, you can expect to:
work closely with technical colleagues in identifying and developing new patenting.
Original patent drafting is an expected activity
You will need to be perceptive and creative to see and define the IP opportunities arising within technical projects
Any other additional responsibilities as assigned, including without limitation infringement risk assessments, IP-related agreement work, and general IP-related advice
The working philosophy of the Infineum Law Department is to handle its patent matters in-house wherever possible. Current patent attorneys conduct their own proceedings before the USPTO and EPO Appeal Boards, and across the department there is a depth of experience in contentious matters, including patent litigation in the UK, US and Asia-Pacific regions. Validity challenges arise regularly in the areas of chemical practice relevant to Infineum, and knowledgeable experience in handling post-grant review proceedings such as IPRs in the US, and/or oppositions in Europe and Japan, will be advantageous.
Above all, you will be willing to work collaboratively with new legal, technical and commercial colleagues, and to adapt to the cultural diversity of a global business. Those equipped and motivated to help scientists see the possibilities in their research, tease out the nuances in their opponent’s tactics, and plot a safe path through a challenging risk environment are likely to find this opportunity most rewarding.
A successful candidate will have:
JD degree and a license to practice law in at least one US state is required.
Must be admitted to at least one state bar and be in good standing.
Registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
Background and/or experience in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a Material Science.

Experience in analysing the patentability of inventions and validity of patents, including preparation of application and filing.
Experience investigating infringement by third parties.
